Calculate Your Fertile Window
Understanding Your Fertility Cycle
Every month, your body prepares for a possible pregnancy. About midway through your menstrual cycle, one of your ovaries releases an egg in a process called ovulation. This egg travels down the fallopian tube, where it can be fertilised by sperm.
The egg survives for about 12-24 hours after ovulation, but sperm can live in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days. This means your fertile window is actually about 6 days long — the 5 days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself.
Fertility Support in South Africa
If you have been trying to conceive for 12 months (or 6 months if you are over 35) without success, consider consulting a fertility specialist. South Africa has several excellent fertility clinics, including Medfem, Vitalab, Cape Fertility Clinic, and Aevitas. Many medical aids provide some fertility treatment coverage.
Over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits are available at Clicks, Dis-Chem, and most pharmacies across South Africa, typically costing between R150-R400.
